The author, Sarah Fitzpatrick, wrote that Mr. Patel\u2019s conduct had \u201coften alarmed officials at the F.B.I. and the Department of Justice.\u201d The article said he \u201chas also earned a reputation for acting impulsively during high-stakes investigations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Patel denied the claims in a statement to The Atlantic, which was included in the article. He immediately began threatening a lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against both The Atlantic and Ms. Fitzpatrick. The suit seeks $250 million in damages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In his complaint, Mr. Patel accused the defendants of \u201cpublishing an article replete with false and obviously fabricated allegations designed to destroy Director Patel\u2019s reputation and drive him from office.\u201d Mr. Patel also said in the suit that The Atlantic had published the article \u201cdespite being expressly warned, hours before publication, that the central allegations were categorically false.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">A spokeswoman for the The Atlantic said publication stood by its reporting. \u201cWe will vigorously defend The Atlantic and our journalists against this meritless lawsuit,\u201d she said in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The lawsuit is the latest in a series from the Trump administration against media outlets over unfavorable reporting. Last week, a federal judge <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/13\/business\/media\/trump-wall-street-journal-lawsuit-dismissed-epstein.html\" title=\"\">dismissed<\/a> President Trump\u2019s complaint against The Wall Street Journal over a birthday message to the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, though Mr. Trump may refile that suit.
