Andy Beshear of Kentucky said the party could lure back working-class voters by focusing on kitchen-table issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The 2028 presidential shadow primary arrived in the swing state of Michigan on Saturday, with several potential Democratic candidates test-driving their pitches before a crowd of party activists eager to turn the page on President Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The Democrats\u2019 remarks at a Women\u2019s Caucus luncheon hosted by the Michigan Democratic Party are part of a weekend of programming in Detroit that will culminate with the state party\u2019s convention on Sunday. Michigan has been pivotal in recent Democratic presidential primaries and general elections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">A week ago, the three potential candidates \u2014 and many more \u2014 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/11\/us\/politics\/democrats-president-2028-sharpton-convention-takeaways.html\" title=\"\">gathered in New York for a convention<\/a> that was the first of many Democratic auditions before what is expected to be a wide-open 2028 race. As they travel the country, these Democrats are delivering stump-speech-style messages that often include sharp criticisms of the president and his party.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cWe are dealing with the most corrupt, callous and incompetent presidential administration in the history of the United States \u2014 period,\u201d Ms. Harris, the 2024 nominee, said at the luncheon Saturday, decrying a war with Iran that \u201cthe American people do not want\u201d and that she said had eroded the nation\u2019s global standing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Booker, who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/13\/us\/politics\/cory-booker-drops-out.html\" title=\"\">ran for president in 2020<\/a>, called for Democrats to unify going into the midterm elections, saying that the Trump administration was inflicting a \u201cterrible storm\u201d on Americans through its handling of immigration, the economy and the Iran war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cOur kryptonite is division,\u201d Mr. Booker said, adding that the party should have a \u201crobust dialogue\u201d during the primary season but should not allow its disagreements to bleed into the general election. \u201cI\u2019ve seen it too much in our party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">He said some Democrats turned away from Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Ms. Harris in 2024 because they disagreed with them on a sliver of the issues. (Ms. Clinton and Ms. Harris both narrowly lost Michigan to Mr. Trump.) \u201cYou may disagree with her on 10 percent of her views,\u201d Mr. Booker said of voters who did not turn out for Ms. Harris. \u201cBut you let someone get in office who you disagree with on everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Beshear downplayed his own remarks, calling Ms. Harris the \u201cstar of the show.\u201d But he offered himself as \u201cliving, breathing proof\u201d that Democrats could \u201cwin in places that you don\u2019t expect,\u201d emphasizing that Mr. Trump <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/11\/05\/us\/elections\/results-president.html\" title=\"\">carried his state<\/a> by 31 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cWe do it by recognizing that when most people wake up in the morning, they\u2019re not thinking about politics,\u201d Mr. Beshear said. \u201cThey\u2019re thinking about their jobs, and whether they make enough to support their family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Later Friday, Mr. Beshear spoke at a fund-raising dinner honoring Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan. He described Mr. Trump as \u201cout of control, unchecked and unhinged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cI believe that Donald Trump won because he was able to convince that last group of undecided voters that he\u2019d be less focused on culture war issues and more focused on lowering costs and addressing inflation,\u201d Mr. Beshear said. \u201cNow I don\u2019t think that that was fair. But it\u2019s also the exact opposite of what he\u2019s doing right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Ms. Whitmer focused on the midterms in her remarks, saying that \u201cMichigan is in the spotlight\u201d and that \u201cthe stakes just don\u2019t get higher than this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Seen by some Democrats as a potential 2028 contender, Ms. Whitmer has not been as overt as others in expressing interest in a run. \u201cI anticipate helping, but I don\u2019t know if I\u2019m going to be the person,\u201d she <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q4HH9at5IwE\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said last fall.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Michigan, a perennial swing state with a diverse electorate, has played a central role in past Democratic presidential primaries. In 2020, Joseph R. Biden Jr. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/10\/us\/politics\/michigan-primary-results.html\" title=\"\">took firm command<\/a> of the Democratic presidential race with a decisive <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/03\/10\/us\/elections\/results-michigan-president-democrat-primary-election.html\" title=\"\">win over<\/a> Senator Bernie Sanders <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/03\/10\/us\/elections\/results-michigan-president-democrat-primary-election.html\" title=\"\">in Michigan.<\/a> (Michigan Democrats <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/17\/us\/politics\/2028-democratic-primary-states-iowa-south-carolina-nevada-new-hampshire.html\" title=\"\">have pushed for their state<\/a> to be placed at the start of the party\u2019s 2028 presidential primary calendar.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The state has also been at the center of some of Democrats\u2019 most divisive debates. In the 2024 presidential primary, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/28\/upshot\/michigan-primary-biden-2024.html\" title=\"\">about one in eight voters<\/a> in Michigan voted \u201cuncommitted\u201d as part of a protest of Mr. Biden\u2019s approach to the war in Gaza. (He was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/02\/27\/us\/elections\/results-michigan-democratic-presidential-primary.html\" title=\"\">running for re-election<\/a> at the time.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In recent months, Ms. Harris and Mr. Booker have undertaken <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/04\/us\/politics\/newsom-shapiro-democrats-2028-memoirs.html\" title=\"\">national book tours<\/a>, fueling 2028 speculation. At the convention in New York, Ms. Harris said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/10\/us\/politics\/eying-2028-ambitious-democrats-court-black-voters.html\" title=\"\">she \u201cmight\u201d run<\/a>, and Mr. Booker brushed aside a question about 2028 by saying he was focused on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/11\/us\/politics\/democrats-president-2028-sharpton-convention-takeaways.html\" title=\"\">\u201cpresent action.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In interviews, attendees at the luncheon on Saturday were split as to whether Ms. Harris should run again. Antoinette Wallace, 46, a Macomb County commissioner from Mount Clemens, said, \u201cI honestly don\u2019t think she should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Ms. Harris \u201cgave all that she could\u201d in 2024, Ms. Wallace said. \u201cBut I think the United States has already shown her that there\u2019s not a lot of support where it\u2019s needed,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">One Democrat and potential presidential candidate who lives in Michigan, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/01\/us\/politics\/pete-buttigieg-drops-out.html\" title=\"\">ran<\/a> in 2020, was not in the state on Saturday.
