Flynn, President Trump\u2019s former national security adviser, $1.25 million to settle claims that he was wrongfully prosecuted for making false statements to federal agents investigating ties between Russia and Mr. Trump\u2019s 2016 presidential campaign, a person familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The settlement agreement, which put to rest a lawsuit Mr. Flynn filed three years ago, was an extraordinary example of how the Trump administration has offered legal relief to those aligned with the president. It appeared to be part of a broader effort to erase the effect of some of the prominent criminal cases brought against Mr. Trump and his allies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Flynn\u2019s suit, filed in Federal District Court in Tampa, accused federal prosecutors of maliciously charging him with lying to investigators who were working on the Russia inquiry, even though he had twice <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/01\/us\/politics\/michael-flynn-guilty-russia-investigation.html\" title=\"\">pleaded guilty<\/a> to misleading the F.B.I. about conversations he had had with a Russian diplomat as Mr. Trump was poised to enter the White House for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In 2020, after an unusual pressure campaign by Mr. Trump and several of his allies, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/07\/us\/politics\/michael-flynn-case-dropped.html\" title=\"\">the Justice Department dropped its case against Mr. Flynn<\/a>, chiseling away at the results of the Russia investigation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Both the Justice Department and Mr. Flynn himself hailed the agreement in separate statements, hinting at the cooperative nature of the settlement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">A department spokeswoman called it \u201can important step in redressing\u201d a \u201chistoric injustice,\u201d and accused those who had worked on the Russia investigation of abusing their power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Flynn, in a statement issued by his lawyer, Jesse Binnall, said he was pleased by the agreement, which ended \u201ca coordinated effort to pursue an innocent man as part of a broader campaign to undermine President Trump and his administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><span title=\"ScoopHelper edit storyline button\" class=\"styln-edit-storyline css-1ukzkg8\" data-storyline-uri=\"nyt:\/\/storyline\/2de31dda-2258-4e5d-9dcf-8b8f41f783c3\" data-storyline-inline-module-name=\"live updates\"\/><\/p>\n<div role=\"complementary\" aria-labelledby=\"storyline-latest-updates\" class=\"css-ya6f0r\">\n<div class=\"css-8atqhb\">\n<div class=\"css-1rqamrr\"><time class=\"css-101kej7\" datetime=\"2026-03-25T22:56:01.000Z\"><span>Updated<!-- -->\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span aria-hidden=\"true\" data-time=\"abs\" class=\"css-1stvlmo\">March 25, 2026, 6:56 p.m. ET<\/span><span data-time=\"rel\" class=\"css-kpxlkr\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/time><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cIt marks a meaningful step toward righting a profound wrong,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The Russia investigation, which unfolded during much of Mr. Trump\u2019s first term in office, ultimately determined that his 2016 campaign had not conspired with Russia to help him win the White House, but explicitly did not exonerate him on separate accusations of obstructing justice. The inquiry was first led by James B. Comey, the F.B.I. director, and then after he was fired by Mr. Trump, by the special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/21\/us\/politics\/robert-s-mueller-dead.html\" title=\"\">who died last Friday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump has long complained that the F.B.I. mistreated Mr. Flynn, even though <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/13\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-national-security-adviser-michael-flynn.html\" title=\"\">Mr. Trump fired him weeks into his first presidency<\/a> for lying to Vice President Mike Pence about the conversations with the Russian diplomat. In late 2020, after he lost that year\u2019s election to Joseph R. Biden Jr., <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/25\/us\/politics\/michael-flynn-pardon.html\" title=\"\">Mr. Trump pardoned Mr. Flynn<\/a>, bringing an end to the drawn-out legal saga of his prosecution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">But the end of his criminal case was in essence the beginning of Mr. Flynn\u2019s efforts to sue the Justice Department in a claim that originally sought $50 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">He accused federal law enforcement of opening \u201ca baseless investigation\u201d into him and ultimately filing \u201cunjustified criminal charges.\u201d The Biden administration sought to dismiss the suit, but the litigation took a different turn after Mr. Trump re-entered the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Time and again, the Justice Department under Mr. Trump has sought to use the legal system to punish the president\u2019s enemies and reward his allies and supporters \u2014 including those who have filed wrongful prosecution suits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Last year, the department paid nearly $5 million <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/19\/us\/politics\/ashli-babbitt-jan-6-settlement-trump.html\" title=\"\">to settle a wrongful-death lawsuit<\/a> brought by the relatives of Ashli Babbitt, an Air Force veteran who was killed by the police during the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump himself has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/21\/us\/politics\/trump-justice-department-compensation.html\" title=\"\">filed claims demanding that the Justice Department pay him about $230 million<\/a> in compensation for the two federal prosecutions in which he faced separate charges of trying overturn the 2020 election and illegally holding on to reams of classified documents after he left office in 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/25\/us\/politics\/michael-flynn-doj-settlement-trump.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Justice Department has agreed to pay Michael T.
