Jeffrey R. O\u2019Brien, Capt. Cody A. Khork, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert M. Marzan, Sgt. 1st Class Nicole M. Amor, Sgt. 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens and Sgt. Declan J. Coady.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">All six were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/03\/world\/middleeast\/us-soldiers-killed-iran-war.html\" title=\"\">killed last Sunday in an Iranian drone attack in the Shuaiba port in Kuwait<\/a>. The president met with their families at Dover.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump was accompanied to the \u201cdignified transfers,\u201d as the solemn event is known, by the first lady, Melania Trump; Vice President JD Vance; Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth; and top military officials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Several times in his first term, Mr. Trump witnessed the return of fallen service members to Dover in flag-draped transfer cases. But back then, he was honoring Americans who died in wars that he had inherited from other presidents. This time, he came face to face with the deadly consequences of a war in the Middle East that he launched and is presiding over with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/06\/us\/politics\/trump-unconditional-surrender-iran.html\" title=\"\">no clear end<\/a> in sight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Other recent presidents have made a tradition of participating in dignified transfers at Dover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In 2009, President Barack Obama made <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/30\/us\/30obama.html\" title=\"\">an unannounced midnight visit<\/a> to the base to greet a plane returning the bodies of 18 Americans killed in Afghanistan. At the time, he was weighing whether to send more troops to that country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">President Joseph R. Biden Jr. went in 2021 to watch as a gray C-17 transport plane <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/29\/us\/politics\/biden-dignified-transfer.html\" title=\"\">returned the remains<\/a> of some of the final Americans to die in the war in Afghanistan. There were 11 Marines, a Navy medic and an Army staff sergeant that time. Mr. Biden <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/02\/us\/politics\/biden-soldiers-jordan.html\" title=\"\">was back at Dover in 2024<\/a> for an event to honor three service members killed by Iran-backed militias.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump made his first trip to Dover one month into his first term to honor a 36-year-old killed by Al Qaeda militants in Yemen. On another occasion, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/21\/us\/politics\/trump-dover.html\" title=\"\">he brought the actor Jon Voight along<\/a> to witness the solemn transfer of the bodies of two Army soldiers killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump would speak about his visits in his first term as reminders of what he described as the tragic futility of the \u201cendless wars\u201d he had been elected to stop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">He once called the events at Dover \u201ca very tough experience.\u201d He has spoken at his rallies about the guttural cries of anguish he heard from parents upon seeing a transfer case containing their child\u2019s body come out of a military cargo plane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cThe hardest thing I have to do, by far,\u201d he said in 2019, \u201cis signing letters to parents of soldiers that have been killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Since his attack on Iran, Mr. Trump has spoken more matter-of-factly about the risks to Americans from an extended military engagement. In a video he posted to social media after the first three service members died, Mr. Trump said, \u201cSadly, there will likely be more before it ends.\u201d He continued, \u201cThat\u2019s the way it is. Likely be more. But we\u2019ll do everything possible where that won\u2019t be the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">On Monday, the president said he would not rule out sending ground troops to the Middle East to fight Iran. \u201cI don\u2019t have the yips with respect to boots on the ground,\u201d he <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/02\/us-news\/trump-wont-rule-out-sending-us-troops-into-iran-if-necessary-tells-the-post-i-dont-care-about-polling\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told the New York Post<\/a> on Monday. \u201cLike every president says, \u2018There will be no boots on the ground.\u2019 I don\u2019t say it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">A few days later, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7382697\/trump-iran-war\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Time magazine asked him<\/a> if Americans should worry about retaliatory strikes at home. \u201cI guess,\u201d Mr. Trump said. \u201cBut I think they\u2019re worried about that all the time. We think about it all the time. We plan for it. But yeah, you know, we expect some things. Like I said, some people will die.
