{"id":4258,"date":"2025-12-09T21:58:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T21:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunowner-news.com\/?p=4258"},"modified":"2025-12-09T21:58:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T21:58:14","slug":"military-propaganda-for-boat-strikes-includes-crusader-cross","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunowner-news.com\/?p=4258","title":{"rendered":"Military Propaganda for Boat Strikes Includes \u201cCrusader Cross\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"has-underline\">An official U.S. military<\/span> social media account on Monday shared a photo collage that included a symbol long affiliated with extremist groups \u2014 and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on X trumpeting the deployment of troops to the Caribbean, U.S. Southern Command, or SOUTHCOM, shared an image that prominently displayed a so-called Jerusalem cross on the helmet of a masked commando.<\/p>\n<p>The Jerusalem cross, also dubbed the \u201cCrusader cross\u201d for its roots in Medieval Christians\u2019 holy wars in the Middle East, is not inherently a symbol of extremism. It has, however, become popular on the right to symbolize the march of Christian civilization, with anti-Muslim roots that made it into something of a logo for the U.S. war on terror.<\/p>\n<p>Tattoos of the cross, a squared-off symbol with a pattern of repeating crosses, have appeared on the bodies of people ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/08\/06\/gaza-aid-security-contractor-mulford-ghf\/\">mercenaries hired by the<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/08\/06\/gaza-aid-security-contractor-mulford-ghf\/\">Gaza Humanitarian Foundation<\/a> to Hegseth himself.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the symbol has reared its head again to advertise President Donald Trump\u2019s military buildup against Venezuela \u2014 an overwhelmingly Catholic country \u2014 and boat strikes in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAs with all things Trump, it\u2019s a continuation, with some escalation, and then a transformation into spectacle,\u201d said Yale University historian Greg Grandin, whose work focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/staff\/greg-grandin\/\">U.S. empire in Latin America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The social media post came amid rising controversy over a series of strikes on boats allegedly carrying drugs off the coast of Venezuela, dubbed Operation Southern Spear.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<aside class=\"promote-banner\">\n    <a class=\"promote-banner__link\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/series\/license-to-kill\/\"><br \/><span class=\"promote-banner__image\"><br \/>        <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"promote-banner__text\">\n<p class=\"promote-banner__eyebrow\">\n            Read Our Complete Coverage          <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><br \/><\/aside>\n<p>Hegseth is alleged to have ordered a so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/12\/02\/caribbean-boat-strike-double-tap\/\">double-tap<\/a>\u201d strike, a follow-up attack against a debilitated boat that killed <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/12\/05\/boat-strike-survivors-double-tap\/\">survivors clinging <\/a>to the wreckage for around 45 minutes. The U.S. has carried out 22 strikes since the campaign began in September, <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/11\/17\/trump-boat-strikes-death-toll-caribbean-pacific\/\">killing a total of 87 people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon\u2019s press office declined to comment on the use of the Jerusalem cross, referring questions to SOUTHCOM. But in a reply to the X post on Monday, Hegseth\u2019s deputy press secretary Joel Valdez <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JoelValdezDOW\/status\/1998137431091224700\">signaled his approval<\/a> with emojis of a salute and the American flag. In a statement to the Intercept, SOUTHCOM spokesperson Steven McLoud denied that the post implied any religious or far-right message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe graphic you\u2019re referring to was an illustration of service members in a ready posture during Operation SOUTHERN SPEAR,\u201d McLoud told The Intercept. \u201cThere is no other communication intent for this image.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- BLOCK(cta)[0](%7B%22componentName%22%3A%22CTA%22%2C%22entityType%22%3A%22SHORTCODE%22%2C%22optional%22%3Atrue%7D)(%7B%7D) --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END-BLOCK(cta)[0] --><\/p>\n<p>The original image of the masked service member appears to have come from an album published online by the Pentagon that depicts a training exercise by Marines aboard the USS Iwo Jima in the Caribbean Sea in October. The photo depicting the cross, however, was removed from the album after commentators on social media pointed out its origins.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Saunders, a spokesperson for the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service, the Pentagon-run photo agency, said she was unable to comment directly but forwarded the request to the Marine unit involved in the exercise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContent on DVIDS is published and archived directly by the registered units,\u201d she said, \u201cso we don\u2019t have control over what is posted or removed, nor are we able to comment on those decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hegseth-and-the-cross\"><strong>Hegseth and the Cross<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Jerusalem cross\u2019s popularity on the right has surged in part thanks to featuring in various media, including the 2005 Ridley Scott film \u201cKingdom of Heaven\u201d and video games, according to Matthew Gabriele, a professor of medieval studies at Virginia Tech and a scholar of Crusader iconography.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-right\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt supports the rhetoric of \u2018defense of homeland.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt supports the rhetoric of \u2018defense of homeland,\u2019\u201d Gabriele told The Intercept, \u201cbecause the crusaders, in the right\u2019s understanding, were waging a defensive war against enemies trying to invade Christian lands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The symbol\u2019s position of prominence in official military communications is just the latest example of a <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/02\/19\/deportation-asmr-video-trump-musk-immigrants\/\">trollish extremism <\/a>by the Trump administration\u2019s press teams, which have made a point of reveling in the cruelty wrought on its perceived enemies at home and abroad, or \u201cowning the libs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s post may also be intended as Hegseth putting his thumb in the eye of the Pentagon\u2019s old guard. Hegseth\u2019s embrace of the symbol \u2014 in the form of a gawdy chest tattoo \u2014 once stymied, however temporarily, his ambitions in the military.<\/p>\n<p>Folling the January 6 insurrection, according to Hegseth and reporting by the Washington Post, Hegseth was ordered to stand down rather than deploy with his National Guard unit ahead of the 2021 inauguration of Joe Biden. The decision to treat Hegseth as a possible \u201cinsider threat\u201d came after a someone flagged a photo of a shirtless Hegseth to military brass, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/investigations\/2024\/11\/16\/pete-hegseth-tattoo-national-guard\/\">according to the Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI joined the Army in 2001 because I wanted to serve my country. Extremists attacked us on 9\/11, and we went to war,\u201d Hegseth wrote \u201cThe War on Warriors,\u201d his 2024 memoir. \u201cTwenty years later, I was deemed an \u2018extremist\u2019 by that very same Army.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hegseth was hardly chastened by the episode and has since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/mar\/27\/pete-hegseth-tattoo-arabic-language\">gotten more tattoos with more overt anti-Muslim resonance<\/a>, including the Arabic word word for \u201cinfidel,\u201d which appeared on his bicep sometime in the past several years. In the context of renewed U.S. focus on Latin America, however, it\u2019s a potent symbol of the move of military action from the Middle East to the Western Hemisphere.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-right\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re globalizing the Monroe Doctrine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The post comes on the heels of the release of the Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2025-National-Security-Strategy.pdf\">National Security Strategy<\/a>, a 33-page document outlining the administration\u2019s foreign-policy priorities that explicitly compared Trump\u2019s stance to the Monroe Doctrine, the turn-of-the-century policy of U.S. dominance in Latin America in opposition to colonialism by other foreign powers.
