{"id":4161,"date":"2025-11-15T15:31:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-15T15:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunowner-news.com\/?p=4161"},"modified":"2025-11-15T15:31:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-15T15:31:12","slug":"rubio-labels-antifa-foreign-terrorist-group-to-go-after-u-s-allies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunowner-news.com\/?p=4161","title":{"rendered":"Rubio Labels Antifa Foreign Terrorist Group To Go After U.S. Allies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"has-underline\">Hungarian Prime Minister<\/span> Viktor Orb\u00e1n\u2019s government launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/world\/hungary-fascism-european-union-activism\/\">continentwide manhunt<\/a> when a group of European antifascists attacked a neo-Nazi rally three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Orb\u00e1n, though, showed no such appetite for cracking down on the annual fascist rally, which this February <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/eurojewcong\/status\/1888922107939008879\">drew attendees <\/a>sporting SS patches, swastikas, and the \u201cTotenkopf\u201d death\u2019s head symbol \u2014 all under the watchful eye of Hungarian police.<\/p>\n<p>The aggressive response to antifascist activists, compared to the kid-gloves treatment of neo-Nazi demonstrators, has roiled European politics for years.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio joined the fray, inserting the U.S. into the debate by declaring the antifascist group that attacked the 2023 rally a terrorist organization.<\/p>\n<p>Though the designation is aimed at foreign groups, Rubio said that he was acting in accordance with President Donald Trump\u2019s National Security Presidential Memorandum-7, or NSPM-7, regarding purported \u201cdomestic\u201d terrorists.<\/p>\n<p>The terror designation will cut off the small Antifa Ost group, and three others designated by Rubio on Thursday, from raising funds in the U.S. It could also imperil American antifascist groups with civil and criminal allegations of \u201cmaterial support\u201d for terrorism, a civil rights lawyer warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe clever way to go about it for them is to designate some foreign organization, because a foreign organization can be designated and there is almost no due process,\u201d said Shane Kadidal, a lawyer at the Center for Constitutional Rights. \u201cThen, you go after the U.S. groups for supposedly coordinating their political messages with the messages of the foreign groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- BLOCK(cta)[0](%7B%22componentName%22%3A%22CTA%22%2C%22entityType%22%3A%22SHORTCODE%22%2C%22optional%22%3Atrue%7D)(%7B%7D) --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END-BLOCK(cta)[0] --><\/p>\n<p>Rubio\u2019s announcement follows on the heels of one from Trump in September that he was <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/09\/18\/trump-antifa-domestic-terrorism\/\">designating antifa a \u201cmajor terrorist organization,\u201d<\/a> which has no basis in law. The foreign terrorist organization designations, however, entail significant legal consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Under a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2009\/08-1498\">2010 ruling<\/a> from the Supreme Court, domestic groups can face \u201cmaterial support\u201d charges for providing nonviolent support to designated foreign terrorist organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Kadidal said the Trump administration could essentially try to use the foreign terrorist designations as a workaround to target domestic antifascists with \u201cmaterial support\u201d charges. Key questions such as whether domestic activists had knowledge and intent to coordinate with foreign groups can be left for a jury to decide based on circumstantial evidence, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is one of those things that makes this so dangerous,\u201d he said. \u201cThe jury may just decide, \u2018Yeah, whatever you have alleged about this coordination of messaging is true, because these are bad people in front of me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJuries do this thing all the time. Orb\u00e1n\u2019s government relentlessly sought the extradition of alleged participants in the antifascist action and pressed for long prison terms.<\/p>\n<p>In the years since, neo-Nazis have continued to gather in Budapest under the protection of Hungarian police, in sharp contrast to the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/06\/28\/nx-s1-5449685\/hungary-budapest-pride-defies-ban\">ban on pride parades<\/a>. Antifa Ost\u2019s alleged members, meanwhile, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-to-designate-germanys-antifa-ost-a-terrorist-group\/a-74737299\">faced trials in Germany<\/a> and Hungary, where one faces<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/14\/afd-hails-us-ban-european-leftwing-groups-historians-fear-anti-fascist-crackdown\"> up to 23 years in prison.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- BLOCK(promote-post)[0](%7B%22componentName%22%3A%22PROMOTE_POST%22%2C%22entityType%22%3A%22SHORTCODE%22%2C%22optional%22%3Atrue%7D)(%7B%22slug%22%3A%22chilling-dissent%22%2C%22crop%22%3A%22promo%22%7D) -->  <\/p>\n<aside class=\"promote-banner\">\n    <a class=\"promote-banner__link\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/collections\/chilling-dissent\/\"><br \/>\n              <span class=\"promote-banner__image\"><br \/>\n                  <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"promote-banner__text\">\n<p class=\"promote-banner__eyebrow\">\n            Read our complete coverage          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>    <\/a><br \/>\n  <\/aside>\n<p><!-- END-BLOCK(promote-post)[0] --><\/p>\n<p>In addition to Antifa Ost, Rubio designated three other groups as terrorists: the Informal Anarchist Federation\/International Revolutionary Front of Italy; and in Greece, the groups Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense.<\/p>\n<p>The groups\u2019 actions \u2014 ranging from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/greek-urban-guerrilla-group-claims-attack-hellenic-train-2025-04-14\/\">bombing of a Greek train office<\/a> to the non-fatal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-18036388\">shooting of a nuclear company\u2019s executive<\/a> \u2014 have drawn little notice in the U.S., but the State Department cast them in dramatic terms in a social media post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnarchist militants have waged terror campaigns in the United States and Europe, conspiring to undermine the foundations of Western Civilization through their brutal attacks,\u201d the department<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StateDept\/status\/1989034285819740531?s=20\"> said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rubio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/office-of-the-spokesperson\/2025\/11\/terrorist-designations-of-antifa-ost-and-three-other-violent-antifa-groups\/\">promised<\/a> more crackdowns to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States will continue using all available tools to protect our national security and public safety,\u201d he said in a statement, \u201cand will deny funding and resources to terrorists, including targeting other Antifa groups across the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-trump-s-hungarian-pals\">Trump\u2019s <strong>Hungarian<\/strong> Pals<\/h2>\n<p>Despite lacking a basis in law, Trump\u2019s domestic terror label for antifascists has already had real-world effects.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the International Anti-Fascist Defence Fund, a group that has supported antifascists in the U.S., announced that it was shutting down its fundraising channels as a \u201cprecaution\u201d in response to Trump\u2019s \u201cedict.\u201d The group has raised money for antifascists in the U.S. and abroad, including the counter-protesters in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are presently exploring our options for re-establishing the Defence Fund\u2019s infrastructure in a country not currently governed by fascists and we hope to have good news about that shortly,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BLOCK(newsletter)[0](%7B%22componentName%22%3A%22NEWSLETTER%22%2C%22entityType%22%3A%22SHORTCODE%22%2C%22optional%22%3Atrue%7D)(%7B%7D) --><\/p>\n<div class=\"newsletter-embed flex-col items-center print:hidden\" id=\"third-party--article-mid\" data-module=\"InlineNewsletter\" data-module-source=\"web_intercept_20241230_Inline_Signup_Replacement\">\n<div class=\"-mx-5 sm:-mx-10 p-5 sm:px-10 xl:-ml-5 lg:mr-0 xl:px-5 bg-accentLight hidden\" data-name=\"subscribed\">\n<h2 class=\"font-sans font-light uppercase text-[30px] leading-8 text-white tracking-[0.01em] mb-0\">\n      We\u2019re independent of corporate interests \u2014 and powered by members. Prosecutors would still have to convince judges and juries to secure criminal convictions against domestic activists.<\/p>\n<p>The designations from Rubio, however, could also open the floodgates for private actors who could file civil lawsuits on even flimsier grounds.<\/p>\n<p>Rubio designated the antifascist groups as both specially designated global terrorists and foreign terrorist organizations. The latter designation, which goes into effect November 20, opens domestic groups to civil liability for allegedly providing material support.<\/p>\n<p>The same legal theory has been <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2024\/05\/10\/october-7-survivors-lawsuit-palestine-hamas-sjp-protests\/\">used by pro-Israel law firms to harass pro-Palestine student protesters<\/a>.
