{"id":3754,"date":"2025-07-19T10:47:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T10:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunowner-news.com\/?p=3754"},"modified":"2025-07-19T10:47:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T10:47:15","slug":"u-s-nonprofits-funnel-millions-to-israeli-army-volunteers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunowner-news.com\/?p=3754","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Nonprofits Funnel Millions to Israeli Army Volunteers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"has-underline\">American volunteers<\/span><span class=\"has-underline\"> for<\/span> the Israeli army have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DDpqKfZRHa5\/?hl=en\">partied<\/a> with Ben Shapiro in Boca Raton, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DE3xj9yMTIM\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=6\">met<\/a> with House Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2023\/11\/01\/brian-mast-palestinian-civilians-gaza-aid-aipac\/\">Brian Mast<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2024\/05\/04\/josh-gottheimer-mike-lawler-campus-protests\/\">Mike Lawler<\/a> in Washington, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DDvDN5CB70O\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\">joined<\/a> New York City Mayor Eric Adams at Gracie Mansion. On a Manhattan rooftop late last year, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/nonprofit-fills-a-black-hole-for-idf-lone-soldiers-returning-home-with-ptsd\/\">sipped cocktails<\/a> and reconnected with people they\u2019d met before \u2014 supporting Israel in its campaign of bombing, displacement, and starvation in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>These efforts were organized by Nevut, a New York-based charity supporting American \u201clone soldiers\u201d who sign up for the Israeli military. Among its <a href=\"https:\/\/nevut.org\/nevut-events\/\">upcoming events<\/a> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DLi2y4IxHJF\/?hl=en\">wellness retreat<\/a> to Panama for lone soldier veterans who served in the Israeli military during its ongoing genocide in Gaza, which has killed more than 58,000 people \u2014 nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorswithoutborders.org\/latest\/msf-survey-staff-and-their-families-gaza-shows-almost-half-those-killed-war-were-children\">half of them<\/a> children \u2014 according to Gaza\u2019s health ministry. Other estimates put the death toll at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-02009-8\">80,000<\/a> or higher.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nevut, which operates across 22 states, is one of at least 20 U.S.-based charities directly funding lone soldier programs. Since 2020, according to The Intercept\u2019s analysis of their tax forms, these organizations have spent over $26 million to recruit and support lone soldiers from initial drafting to reintegration. The groups provide subsidized apartments, therapy, wellness retreats, and equipment to Israeli military units.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BLOCK(cta)[0](%7B%22componentName%22%3A%22CTA%22%2C%22entityType%22%3A%22SHORTCODE%22%2C%22optional%22%3Atrue%7D)(%7B%7D) --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END-BLOCK(cta)[0] --><\/p>\n<p>The Intercept reviewed five years of tax documents that show 2023 was the most lucrative year on record for lone soldier programs. After Israel began calling up hundreds of thousands of reservists in the wake of Hamas\u2019s October 7 attack, U.S. donors poured funding into the organizations. Each year from 2002 to 2020, between<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1111\/socf.12806\"> 3,000 and 4,000<\/a> lone soldiers served in the Israeli military, about a third of them from North America. Since October 7, 2023, it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/nonprofit-fills-a-black-hole-for-idf-lone-soldiers-returning-home-with-ptsd\/\">estimated<\/a> that 7,000 lone soldiers from the U.S. alone have either signed up or returned to Israel to serve.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The programs have helped to prop up an Israeli military now facing its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.972mag.com\/israeli-army-refusal-crisis-gaza-war\/\">biggest recruitment crisis in decades<\/a>. As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drags the assault on Gaza through its second year, civilians have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/25\/nx-s1-5339490\/israel-protests-netanyahu-hostages-gaza-war\">protested<\/a> his government and soldiers have refused to show up for reserve duty. With an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.972mag.com\/israeli-army-refusal-crisis-gaza-war\/\">estimated<\/a> 100,000 Israeli soldiers refusing service, volunteers from the U.S. and other countries provide reinforcements. Last year, the Israeli military estimated that at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2024\/02\/22\/israel-gaza-war-americans-killed\/\">23,000<\/a> American citizens were currently serving, a combination of lone soldiers and Americans who immigrated to Israel with their families.<\/p>\n<p>On social media, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nevutorg\/?hl=en\">Nevut<\/a> and other organizations post pictures, videos, and testimonies from lone soldiers serving in Gaza.<strong> <\/strong>Earlier this month, Nevut promoted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DLqzJ9Hgktu\/?hl=en\">video<\/a> advertising a day at a shooting range as \u201ca little dose of enjoyable fire.\u201d A man wearing military tactical gear says: \u201cAll the guys here serve in the IDF; a majority serve in the war in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another Instagram <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DK-RlaJx3oG\/?hl=en\">video <\/a>encourages lone soldier veterans to reach out if they\u2019re thinking of going back into combat. One Nevut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DIhWoP3z8wi\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=3\">post<\/a> advises viewers on \u201cWhat not to ask a lone soldier,\u201d including: \u201cDid you kill anyone?\u201d \u201cHow many people died over there?\u201d and \u201cWere you in Gaza or Lebanon?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese can potentially feel like dismissive, political, or emotionally charged questions,\u201d the post warns.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-ft-photo is-style-default aligncenter\">\n    <figcaption class=\"photo__figcaption\">\n      <span class=\"photo__caption\">A screenshot from Nevut&#8217;s Instagram. <\/span><span class=\"photo__credit\">Screenshot: Nevut \/ Instagram<\/span>    <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the United States\u2019 steady supply of weapons <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/israel-gaza-america-biden-administration-weapons-bombs-state-department\">shipments<\/a> to Israel has come under scrutiny from <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2024\/11\/20\/sanders-joint-resolution-arms-weapons-israel-gaza\/\">elected officials<\/a> to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/05\/world\/middleeast\/united-nations-israel-weapons.html\"> United Nations<\/a>, thousands of U.S. civilians who travel to Israel to join the army have received markedly less attention. Back at home, American lone soldiers do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejewishstar.com\/stories\/3-lone-soldiers-speak-in-riverdale,24928?\">speaking tours<\/a> to cleanse the reputation of the Israeli military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI almost died for Palestinian children,\u201d said lone soldier Eli Wininger at an event in an Alabama church put on by the Massachusetts-based lone soldier organization Growing Wings. A Los Angeles native, Wininger has touched many sides of the lone soldier ecosystem: He was recruited after taking part in the youth scouts program Garin Tzabar, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20241111020544\/https:\/\/jewishfuturepromise.org\/signer-spotlight-eli-wininger\/\">served with the Israeli military in Gaza,<\/a> returned to the United States, and recently started a volunteer position as a youth leader with the U.S. nonprofit Friends of the IDF. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DGvwR9SpyHC\/\">Speaking<\/a> at the Growing Wings event earlier this year, he said he was instructed \u201cnot to kill Palestinian children. There is not a single soldier in there that is doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the U.N., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/press-releases\/unimaginable-horrors-more-50000-children-reportedly-killed-or-injured-gaza-strip\">over 50,000 children<\/a> have been killed or injured in Gaza since October 7, 2023 \u2014 though this is likely an undercount.<\/p>\n<p>Wininger did not respond to The Intercept\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>In response to questions on lone soldiers and the army\u2019s affiliation with U.S. nonprofit groups, the IDF told The Intercept it had \u201cno comment.\u201d Neither Nevut nor Growing Wings responded to The Intercept\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Federal law prohibits recruiting for foreign armies within U.S. borders, but it allows donations and promotion of foreign volunteering. Where, if at all, efforts to help American teens join the Israeli military run afoul of U.S. policy on foreign fighting is hard to determine, experts say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe State Department basically says on the website that we don\u2019t want Americans serving abroad,\u201d said David Malet, an associate professor of justice, law, and criminology at American University who researches foreign fighters. \u201cBut realistically, we know it\u2019s kind of hard to enforce that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A State Department spokesperson said U.S. citizens serving in the Israeli military are not required to register their service with the U.S. government. Dual citizens must comply with the laws of both countries of which they are a citizen, including any mandatory military service. The department said U.S. citizens are encouraged to consult current travel advisories for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. (It recommends that people reconsider their travel to Israel and the West Bank, and not travel to Gaza.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur embassies overseas maintain rough estimates of U.S. citizens in their countries for contingency planning purposes, but these estimates are imperfect, can vary, and are constantly changing, which is why we do not generally disclose them publicly,\u201d a State Department spokesperson said in a statement.\u202f\u201cU.S. citizens are not required to register their travel to a foreign country with us, so we cannot track with certainty how many U.S. citizens are in any particular country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The State Department referred questions about legal implications of serving in a foreign military to the Department of Justice. DOJ referred questions to the Department of Defense, which referred questions to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. As she walked around her father\u2019s synagogue in Philadelphia in 2009, the congregants stood up to shake her hand and thank her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had just finished guarding a West Bank settlement,\u201d said Strober, now an anti-occupation activist. \u201cEven then, I was like, this is such a weird experience.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Strober was first introduced to the possibility of joining the Israeli military when she was 17, during a <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishchronicle.timesofisrael.com\/the-reform-movement-ends-its-standalone-semester-in-israel-program\/\">high school semester<\/a> she spent in Israel. She said alumni of the semester in Israel program wearing miliary uniforms spoke to her group. \u201cThere were a lot of informal ways of talking about enlisting in the army,\u201d Strober told The Intercept.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She later joined after participating in the <a href=\"https:\/\/garintzabar.org\/\">Garin Tzabar<\/a> program, which runs two major<a href=\"https:\/\/garintzabar.org\/about\/faq\/\"> drafting sessions<\/a> each year. The program is funded by Tzofim, the biggest Zionist youth movement in Israel and the U.S. Also known as the Friends of Israel Scouts, the group has a U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/organizations\/133843506\">nonprofit <\/a>in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Tzofim \u201cbegins educating kids at five years old,\u201d said one former Zionist youth leader in Australia, who requested anonymity for fear of professional retaliation. Another school in New Jersey, the Rae Kushner Yeshiva, has congratulated an alum who became a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kushner.alumni\/posts\/pfbid02h8iCAhCe6BgzReAS5nRGjm62FxkszMAERkFK9Ld5jQHvowddLEdzpt2jM6KpTNLzl\">social media manager<\/a> in the IDF Spokesperson\u2019s Unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer work was recognized as important for hasbara by the Israeli news,\u201d the school boasted on Facebook, using a term for Israeli public diplomacy, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.972mag.com\/hasbara-why-does-the-world-fail-to-understand-us\/\">propaganda<\/a> tailored to international audiences. Another alum of the school served as a lone soldier in the army and was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chaimkasnett.com\/articles-and-posts\">friend of the son<\/a> of Netanyahu, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kushner.alumni\/posts\/pfbid0qR21DFRcVM3ZgGL8fNPF7axhC4pTnUBhJfGzFmCvWCfe7eDvJwd31vkGdkdcXaLul\">commemorated<\/a> him after he died while traveling in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>One charity reviewed by The Intercept, the <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/organizations\/461460146\">Lone Soldier Foundation<\/a>, specifically provides funds for the children of families that attend a synagogue in northern New Jersey who join the Israeli military. According to the group\u2019s most recent tax filing, it also supports the units in which the children of members of its congregation serve. It doesn\u2019t allow them to think critically because it\u2019s so close, because you know people who have been killed, or people who have served.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-charities-nbsp\"><strong>The Charities\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Under heightened<a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/us-news\/2017-10-30\/ty-article-magazine\/how-the-jewish-federations-gave-millions-to-settlers-over-4-years\/0000017f-e09d-d804-ad7f-f1ff17fb0000\"> public scrutiny<\/a>, U.S. nonprofits have distanced themselves from directly funding projects in the West Bank or other<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2023\/11\/02\/kathy-hochul-israel-settlements-uja-federations\/\"> settlements<\/a>, which are illegal under international law.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But U.S.-based nonprofits granted $8.8 million to specific lone soldier programs in 2023 alone, The Intercept found. It\u2019s possible the real number is higher, as nonprofits only have to report foreign grants above a certain threshold.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-right\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t allow American Jewish communities to think critically, because you know people who have been killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The biggest known funder is Friends of the IDF, which has spent nearly $20 million on its lone soldier program since 2020, supporting more than <a href=\"https:\/\/pdf.guidestar.org\/PDF_Images\/2022\/133\/156\/2022-133156445-202333039349301153-9.pdf?_gl=1*1vv8bqz*_gcl_aw*R0NMLjE3MzAyMzE1NzUuQ2owS0NRandqNEs1QmhEWUFSSXNBRDFMeTJwb2U3SndXcXEtZjRjdkFqWEVZZXFlZDlSdVY0MkNodjNOaGJ1Ujl3VWI4M2dzMTZsa0U5UWFBaF9oRUFMd193Y0I.*_gcl_au*Mjc4OTQ2MDQwLjE3MzAyMzE1NzQ.*_ga*MTI5OTgyOTQyNy4xNzMwMjMxNTc0*_ga_5W8PXYYGBX*MTczMDIzNDk5OS4yLjEuMTczMDIzNTAwMi41Ny4wLjA.\">6,500<\/a> lone soldiers each year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/organizations\/133156445\">documents<\/a> filed with the Internal Revenue Service. In a statement, Friends of the IDF, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/friends-of-the-idf-in-crisis-after-internal-report-alleges-financial-abuse-toxic-culture\/\">official partner<\/a> of the Israeli military, said it provides more than 7,000 lone soldiers \u201cwith practical, emotional and mental health support throughout their service to make sure they never feel alone.\u201d The group said about half of the soldiers it backs are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evjcc.org\/nearly-half-of-lone-soldiers-are-israeli-born\/'\">from Israel<\/a> but are considered lone soldiers because they don\u2019t have family support.<\/p>\n<p>On its Instagram page, the group says it is the \u201conly U.S. non-profit working directly with IDF leadership to provide critical support for Israel soldiers\u2019 health, well-being &amp; education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other organizations help offset the costs of living for lone soldiers. Bayit Brigade, which operates in both the U.S. and Israel, helps lone soldiers<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bayitbrigade.org\/\"> find affordable housing<\/a> in Tel Aviv and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewcer.org\/project\/lonesoldiersupport\/\">raises emergency funds<\/a> to help transport soldiers to their bases and provide supplies in the field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bayit Brigade has posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Czoc8YbNsKS\/\">videos<\/a> of volunteers providing resources to the Israeli military\u2019s Yahalom Unit, which conducts \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.idf.il\/en\/mini-sites\/israel-at-war\/all-articles\/the-yahalom-unit-s-operations-during-the-war-against-hamas\/'\">tunnel warfare<\/a>\u201d and demolitions in Gaza, including destroying areas to allow the military to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/article-836077\">operate<\/a>. The organization\u2019s revenue jumped from approximately $160,000 in 2022 to $1.3 million in 2023, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/organizations\/834215005\">nonprofit documents<\/a>. In a statement, the group told The Intercept that following October 7, it \u201ctemporarily expanded its community support efforts to address urgent needs on the ground,\u201d but have \u201cno formal relationship with any government entity or with the IDF.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lines between support, education and recruitment of lone soldiers \u2014 including what a formal relationship entails \u2014 are often blurred, said Strober, the former lone soldier. Garin Tzabar, for example, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.il\/en\/pages\/returning_residents_garin_zabar\">operated in part<\/a> by Israel\u2019s Ministry of Aliyah and Integration. Other efforts to finance lone soldiers, like Bayit Brigade, distance themselves from any sort of affiliation with the Israeli government.<\/p>\n<p>Other organizations also advertise their support for soldiers who fought in Gaza. Friends of Emek Lone Soldiers <a href=\"https:\/\/chayalot.com\/who-we-are\/\">held<\/a> concerts in the West Bank for women who served in Gaza. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lonesoldiercenter.com\/\">website<\/a> of the Michael Levin Lone Soldier Foundation includes testimonies of soldiers who received support while serving in Gaza.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When she was part of the Israeli military, Strober still considered herself a believer in human rights, she told The Intercept. She was working for a human rights organization that supported Gazans\u2019 freedom of movement when, in 2014, Israel launched a series of attacks on Gaza that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/mar\/27\/israel-kills-more-palestinians-2014-than-any-other-year-since-1967\">killed more than 2,000 Palestinians in under two months<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t really know anything about Gaza,\u201d Strober said. \u201cIt was kind of the first time that I had any concept of who Palestinians were on the other side and how much control Israel had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strober said she watched her friends get called up from the reserves and realized she didn\u2019t want to go serve in Gaza.\u00a0\u201cI just remember thinking, I\u2019m not going to go zero in guns to kill Gazans when I\u2019m talking to Gazans on the phone every day,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/07\/19\/lone-soldiers-israel-gaza-idf\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>American volunteers for the Israeli army have partied with Ben Shapiro in Boca Raton, met with House Republicans Brian Mast and Mike Lawler in Washington, and joined New York City Mayor Eric Adams at Gracie Mansion.
