Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., called the expulsions \u201cabhorrent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the men boarded a plane in May, officials told them that they were being sent on a short trip from Texas to another ICE facility in Louisiana. Many hours later, the plane landed in Djibouti.<\/p>\n<p>The men \u2014 convicted criminals who had already served significant prison sentences \u2014 were held in a shipping container for weeks, shackled at the legs, on a U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/06\/05\/ice-immigrants-djibouti-illness-smoke-security\/\">military base in Djibouti<\/a>. This past weekend, they were expelled\u00a0to the violence-plagued nation of South Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>The ICE deception revealed by The Intercept highlights the lengths to which the U.S. government will go to further its anti-immigrant agenda and deport people to so-called third countries to which they have no connections.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BLOCK(cta)[0](%7B%22componentName%22%3A%22CTA%22%2C%22entityType%22%3A%22SHORTCODE%22%2C%22optional%22%3Atrue%7D)(%7B%7D) --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END-BLOCK(cta)[0] --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s ICE treats immigrants as less than human, and this is a prime example,\u201d said Rep. Pramila\u00a0Jayapal, D-Wash., who has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/jayapal.house.gov\/2025\/05\/08\/jayapal-condemns-planned-third-country-removal-flights-to-libya\/#:~:text=Jayapal%20Condemns%20Planned%20Third%2DCountry,as%20others%20with%20legal%20status.\">leading voice<\/a> on the expulsion of immigrants from the U.S. to third countries, and called ICE\u2019s behavior \u201cbeyond cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s ICE treats immigrants as less than human, and this is a prime example.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Jayapal added: \u201cYes, any person convicted of serious crimes should be held accountable \u2014\u00a0but Trump has decided to violate due process rights and ship immigrants to South Sudan, a country so dangerous that the U.S. State Department currently has a \u2018Do Not Travel\u2019 warning for it. Third country deportations with no due process are wrong, period, and we will keep fighting these illegal actions in court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., also called out the government for its deception. \u201cWhat ICE did to these men is a flagrant violation of international law and basic human decency,\u201d she told The Intercept. \u201cLying to people about where they\u2019re being taken and secretly deporting them to a country that is in the midst of war and they have no ties to is cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., called out President Donald Trump and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for \u201cblatantly lying to our neighbors as they disappear them to offshore prisons\u201d and for flouting the rule of law, due process, and the Constitution. She called on Noem to resign.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"has-underline\">While the eight<\/span> men\u00a0were in transit in May \u2014\u00a0thinking they were heading to Louisiana, but in fact en route to Africa \u2014\u00a0a federal judge intervened. Citing a prior nationwide injunction requiring the administration to give deportees advance notice of their destination and a \u201cmeaningful\u201d chance to object if they believed they\u2019d be in danger of harm, the eight men were not flown directly to South Sudan but were instead <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/06\/05\/ice-immigrants-djibouti-illness-smoke-security\/\">diverted to Djibouti<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/07\/03\/supreme-court-trump-immigration-djibouti-south-sudan\/\">Supreme Court ruled<\/a> on July 3 that the expulsion to South Sudan could go forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe deportation of eight men to South Sudan \u2013 a country plagued by famine and brutal civil war \u2013 is abhorrent. The Trump administration\u2019s barbaric practice of expelling immigrants to dangerous \u2018third countries\u2019 is an abuse of our justice system,\u201d Sanders told The Intercept. \u201cEvery person in America is entitled to due process and counsel, regardless of their immigration status or alleged crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-right\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe Trump administration\u2019s barbaric practice of expelling immigrants to dangerous \u2018third countries\u2019 is an abuse of our justice system.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Trump administration celebrated the deportations. \u201cAfter weeks of delays by activist judges that put our law enforcement in danger, ICE deported these 8 barbaric criminals [sic] illegal aliens to South Sudan,\u201d DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told The Intercept in an email.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my district, families were warning us about how rogue and abusive ICE was for years,\u201d Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., told The Intercept. \u201cNow they are showing the world how cruel and lawless they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Intercept sent numerous requests for comment to ICE regarding the lies told to deportees about their supposed transfer to Louisiana. The State Department advises those who travel to South Sudan to draft a will, establish a proof of life protocol with family members, and leave DNA samples with one\u2019s medical provider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conditions in South Sudan are bad enough that we shouldn\u2019t be deporting South Sudanese people there, let alone sending noncitizens who have never lived there and have no support system on the ground,\u201d said Omar. \u201cThis agency has repeatedly shown that it cannot be trusted to uphold human rights. ICE is beyond reform and should be abolished. We need to start imagining what real justice and humane immigration policy actually looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>South Sudan\u2019s foreign ministry said they had received the deportees amid \u201congoing bilateral engagement\u201d between Juba and the Trump administration.\u00a0The agreement to accept the eight men was \u201cpart of a broader framework of cooperation, both countries continue to engage constructively and with good faith on a range of matters, including political, economic, investment, security, humanitarian, and consular-related issues,\u201d according to the spokesperson. \u201cThis engagement aims at normalizing relations, deepening bilateral cooperation, and addressing issues of mutual concern and interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>South Sudan is just the latest nation where the U.S. has expelled immigrants with no ties to that country. The Trump administration began using the notorious\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/04\/22\/trump-latin-america-bukele-el-salvador-prison\/\">Terrorism Confinement Center<\/a>\u00a0in Tecoluca,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/05\/09\/trump-bukele-kilmar-abrego-garcia-el-salvador-cecot-prison\/\">El Salvador<\/a>, as a foreign prison to disappear Venezuelan immigrants in March. The Intercept found that the U.S. has\u00a0already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/06\/25\/trump-immigrant-deportations-supreme-court\/\">explored deals<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/25\/us\/politics\/trump-immigrants-deportations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than a quarter<\/a>\u00a0of the world\u2019s nations to accept so-called third-country nationals. It has been\u00a0employing strong-arm tactics with dozens of smaller, weaker, and economically dependent nations to expand its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/05\/15\/trump-ice-immigrants-deport-prisons-cecot-libya\/\">global gulag for expelled immigrants<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Guantanamo to El Salvador, Djibouti, and South Sudan, the use of offshore prisons is criminal, inhumane, wasteful, and dangerous,\u201d Ramirez told The Intercept. \u201cThe Administration knows it, and they continue to lie to cover up their unlawful actions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The deals are being conducted in secret, and neither the State Department nor ICE will discuss them. With the green light from the Supreme Court, thousands of immigrants are in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/04\/18\/trump-kilmar-abrego-garcia-ms13-gang-database\/\">danger\u00a0<\/a>of being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/05\/09\/trump-bukele-kilmar-abrego-garcia-el-salvador-cecot-prison\/\">disappeared<\/a>\u00a0into this network of deportee dumping grounds.<\/p>\n<p>The State Department, as usual, offered a <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/06\/25\/trump-immigrant-deportations-supreme-court\/\">disingenuous boilerplate<\/a> response that cast the agreement with South Sudan as theoretical. \u201cIn some cases, we might work with other countries to facilitate the removal from the United States of\u00a0nationals\u00a0of third countries who have no legal basis to remain here,\u201d said a spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>This spring, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecRubio\/status\/1908637376403890383\">revocation<\/a> of all visas for South Sudanese passport holders, and blocked the issuance of new visas, citing the country\u2019s refusal to \u201caccept the return of its repatriated citizens in a timely manner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edmund Yakani, a longtime human rights defender in South Sudan and executive director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, called on his government to safeguard the eight men. \u201cWe urge our government not to use the eight deportees as bargaining chips,\u201d he told The Intercept, imploring Juba to provide information on the condition of the men and the next steps awaiting them.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/07\/11\/congress-outraged-ice-lies\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of Congress expressed outrage at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deceiving eight men who were recently deported to South Sudan, as revealed earlier this week in an investigation by The Intercept.
