Israeli forces had already bombed his family\u2019s home in Gaza, killed his older brother, and displaced his family a second time when, one month ago, they shot Ahmed\u2019s mother while she was seeking sustenance for her seven living children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsrael killed my mother,\u201d Ahmed told The Intercept.\u00a0\u201cWe were waiting at the U.S. aid distribution point in Rafah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed\u2019s mother was one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/06\/27\/israel-killed-palestinians-food-aid-gaza\/\">more than 400 Palestinian people<\/a> who have been gunned down by Israeli forces in a particularly brutal new phase of the country\u2019s U.S.-backed genocide in Gaza. After the Israeli military, powered by U.S. bombs, destroyed Gaza\u2019s food supplies and choked daily life to a halt, the government cut off the flow of crucial aid to the people it was starving. The move has forced hungry Palestinians to a limited set of Israeli and U.S.-run aid distribution points. These places have become the sites of dozens of daily murders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor six days before my mother was killed on June 3, she, my sister Mirvat, and I would walk to the U.S. aid distribution point in Rafah every evening, leaving our tent at 7:00 p.m. and waiting until dawn for food,\u201d Ahmed told The Intercept. \u201cThe Israeli army surrounded us with drones, F-16s, tanks, and snipers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-right\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI will never forget the moment I saw my mother shot by Israeli bullets, right in front of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The family made the 2-kilometer journey nightly on empty stomachs. They were \u201cterrified,\u201d Ahmed said, \u201cby the constant shelling and gunfire. We saw martyrs fall while waiting for food. Hundreds were wounded. We were all civilians \u2014 there were no fighters with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed\u2019s older sister Mirvat, 20, told The Intercept that the daily march was just one of many grueling journeys the family was forced to make. \u201cThe Israeli army bombed our home in Khan Yunis,\u201d she said, \u201cwiping away every memory we had in that warm, familiar place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- BLOCK(cta)[0](%7B%22componentName%22%3A%22CTA%22%2C%22entityType%22%3A%22SHORTCODE%22%2C%22optional%22%3Atrue%7D)(%7B%7D) --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END-BLOCK(cta)[0] --><\/p>\n<p>Israeli forces killed her 23-year-old brother, Nabil, in January of last year, Mirvat said, \u201cduring our first grueling displacement journey to <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2024\/02\/14\/intercepted-gaza-rafah-israel\/\">Rafah<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNabil was the backbone of our family \u2014 our only provider,\u201d she added. \u201cHe was studying law and working at a company. He didn\u2019t earn much, but at least he could bring us food. He had dreams of becoming a successful lawyer one day, but Israel killed him \u2014 along with his dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nabil\u2019s death devastated the family, Mirvat said. \u201cBut when Israel killed my mom, it shattered our family. I will never forget the moment I saw my mother shot by Israeli bullets, right in front of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"promote-banner\">\n    <a class=\"promote-banner__link\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/collections\/israel-palestine\/\"><br \/>\n              <span class=\"promote-banner__image\"><br \/>\n                  <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"promote-banner__text\">\n<p class=\"promote-banner__eyebrow\">\n            Read our complete coverage          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>    <\/a><br \/>\n  <\/aside>\n<p><span class=\"has-underline\">On that day,<\/span> Ahmed waited with his sister and his mother for nearly 11 hours at the aid distribution site, suffering through a barrage of tear gas, sound bombs, and gunfire from Israeli forces. They were willing to stick it out for the chance to get some food. It never came.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuddenly, gunfire erupted,\u201d Ahmed said. \u201cMy mother told us to lower our heads, thinking she could shield us. She said, \u2018I\u2019ll at least bring back a kilo of flour.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next thing he remembered was the sound of his sister screaming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI turned around and saw my mother lying on the ground \u2014 shot in the head by Israeli forces,\u201d Ahmed said. \u201cMy sister and I threw ourselves over her body. If we had stood up, we would have been killed too. They were firing directly at us. We lay there for over an hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the brother and sister fled, they were separated, by Mirvat\u2019s estimate, for 30 terrifying minutes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard more gunfire, and someone said a child had been killed,\u201d she said. \u201cI panicked, thinking it was Ahmed. I ran around, crying, searching for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once reunited, they were unable to find their mother\u2019s body and realized they would have to leave her behind. \u201cEven the Red Cross couldn\u2019t reach her,\u201d Ahmed recalled. They have five younger siblings, including Ahmed, ranging in ages from 5 to 15 years old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy little brother and sister still deny she\u2019s gone,\u201d Ahmed said. \u201cThey keep saying she went to get us flour and will come back soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed said that the only physical evidence of his mother he has left are the shoes she wore on the day of her death and the scarf she used to keep warm. But he remembers her kind touch and the way she used to tuck him and his siblings into bed at night.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-left\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMy little brother and sister keep saying she went to get us flour and will come back soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Adding to the pain of losing their mother, Ahmed said, is the fact that the family remains hungry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t eaten bread in two months,\u201d he told The Intercept. \u201cMy mother said she\u2019d bring us flour, but she came back in a white shroud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed knows that his family\u2019s experience is not unique.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of Gaza is starving,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On June 17, Ahmed and Mirvat\u2019s father went out to get flour from a U.S. aid distribution point east of Khan Yunis. He walked 6 kilometers, Mirvat recalled, expecting aid trucks to arrive from the Kerem Shalom crossing in the southern Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe waited there for five hours,\u201d she said, \u201cbut no aid trucks ever arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As he waited, Israeli forces opened fire on the crowd of starving civilians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShrapnel hit his hand,\u201d Mirvat said, wounding him. But she was ultimately grateful for the outcome. \u201cThank God it wasn\u2019t his head.
