{"id":3503,"date":"2025-05-13T23:36:22","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T23:36:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunowner-news.com\/?p=3503"},"modified":"2025-05-13T23:36:22","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T23:36:22","slug":"20-states-sue-trump-over-immigration-demands-and-threats-to-cut-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunowner-news.com\/?p=3503","title":{"rendered":"20 States Sue Trump Over Immigration Demands and Threats to Cut Funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A coalition of 20 states, most led by Democrats, filed two lawsuits against the Trump administration on Tuesday after it threatened to withhold billions in funding unless the states followed its demands on immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The states called the threats, which would cut federal money for transportation, counterterrorism and emergency preparedness, \u201cblatantly illegal\u201d and a \u201chostage scheme.\u201d They argued that the administration was usurping Congress\u2019s authority over spending and using the power of the purse to force states to adopt its policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBy hanging a halt in this critical funding over states like a sword of Damocles, defendants impose immense harm on states,\u201d they argued in one of the suits, \u201cforcing them to choose between readiness for disasters and emergencies, on the one hand, and their judgment about how best to investigate and prosecute crimes, on the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Rob Bonta, the attorney general of California, who is spearheading the litigation, added in a statement that President Trump was treating vital funding as a \u201cbargaining chip.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The White House announced <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/28\/us\/politics\/trump-executive-orders-immigration.html\" title=\"\">two executive orders<\/a> last month threatening to cut off funding to so-called sanctuary jurisdictions if they didn\u2019t fully cooperate with immigration authorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Asked about the lawsuits, Kush Desai, a White House spokesman, said: \u201cAmericans would all be better off if these Democrat attorneys general focused on prosecuting criminals and working with the Trump administration to address the toll of gangster illegal aliens on their communities instead of playing political games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The states\u2019 attorneys general filed both lawsuits \u2014 one naming the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/system\/files\/attachments\/press-docs\/Illinois%20v.%20FEMA%20Filed%20Complaint.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security<\/a> and the other <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/system\/files\/attachments\/press-docs\/State%20of%20California%2C%20et%20al.%20v.%20USDOT%2C%20et%20al.%20Complaint.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the Transportation Department<\/a> \u2014 in Federal District Court in Rhode Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">California, Illinois, New Jersey and Rhode Island are leading both lawsuits. Maryland is also listed as a lead state in the transportation lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Joining them on both suits are Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin. All of the states have Democratic attorneys general and governors, except for Nevada and Vermont, which have Republican governors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A similar lawsuit was filed a few weeks ago by a coalition of 19 states over the administration\u2019s threat to withhold federal funding from states and school districts that have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/25\/us\/trump-dei-schools-lawsuit.html\" title=\"\">certain diversity programs<\/a> in their public schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">State attorneys general have also sued over <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/23\/us\/politics\/states-tariff-trump-lawsuit.html\" title=\"\">tariffs<\/a>, and mass firings at agencies such as the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-education-department-lawsuit-layoffs-77708b838b11ce82e07d3bc012086f0f\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Education<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/20-state-attorneys-general-sue-trump-admin-restore-health-agencies-rcna204824\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Health and Human Services<\/a> Departments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/13\/us\/politics\/lawsuits-federal-funding-immigration.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A coalition of 20 states, most led by Democrats, filed two lawsuits against the Trump administration on Tuesday after it threatened to withhold billions in funding unless the states followed its demands on immigration enforcement.
