Kennedy Jr., <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/16\/us\/politics\/rfk-jr-autism.html\" title=\"\">the health secretary<\/a>, posted photos on Sunday of himself and his grandchildren swimming in a contaminated Washington creek where swimming is not allowed because it is used for sewer runoff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Rock Creek, which flows through much of Northwest Washington, is used to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/opendata.dc.gov\/datasets\/DCGIS::combined-sewer-outfall-sewer-shed\/about#:~:text=CSO%27s%20are%20discharged%20to%20the%20Anacostia%20River%2C%20Rock%20Creek%2C%20Potomac%20River%20or%20tributary%20waters%20at%20CSO%20outfalls%20during%20most%20moderate%20rain%20events.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">drain excess sewage and storm water during rainfall<\/a>. The creek has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/doee.dc.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/dc\/sites\/doee\/service_content\/attachments\/Microbial%20Source%20Tracking%20for%20Rock%20Creek%20in%20Washington%20DC.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">widespread \u201cfecal\u201d contamination<\/a> and high levels of bacteria, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/mywaterway.epa.gov\/waterbody-report\/DOEE\/DCRCR00R_02\/2024#:~:text=Plan%20in%20Place-,Escherichia%20Coli,-(E.%20coli)\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">including E. coli<\/a>, and the city <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/doee.dc.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/dc\/sites\/doee\/service_content\/attachments\/DC%20Swim%20Ban%20web.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">has banned swimming in all of its waterways<\/a> for more than 50 years because of the widespread contamination of Rock Creek and other nearby rivers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cRock Creek has high levels of bacteria and other infectious pathogens that make swimming, wading, and other contact with the water a hazard to human (and pet) health,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/rocr\/planyourvisit\/stay-dry-stay-safe.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the National Park Service<\/a> wrote in an advisory on its website, adding \u201cAll District waterways are subject to a swim ban \u2014 this means wading, too!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Mr. Kennedy over the weekend shared photos of himself swimming in Rock Creek, with one image showing him completely submerged in the water. Mr. Kennedy said in the social media post that he had gone for the swim in Rock Creek during a Mother\u2019s Day hike in Dumbarton Oaks Park with his family \u2014 including his grandchildren, who are also seen in the photos swimming in the contaminated water.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dumbarton Oaks Park is downstream from Piney Branch, a tributary of Rock Creek that receives about 40 million gallons of untreated sewage and storm water overflow each year, according to the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dcwater.com\/projects\/piney-branch-tunnel\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">D.C. Water and Sewer Authority.<\/a> City authorities are planning to build a tunnel that will reduce the amount of sewage that flows into Piney Branch and Rock Creek.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A spokeswoman for Mr. Kennedy did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was the latest in a series of peculiar incidents related to Mr. Kennedy\u2019s outdoorsman persona.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As a teen in the 1970s, Mr. Kennedy earned <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/timesmachine.nytimes.com\/timesmachine\/1973\/11\/11\/91032390.html?pageNumber=595\" title=\"\">a reputation as a reckless adventurer<\/a>, eating bushmeat and enduring disease on trips to South America and on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ERBvyJfYF5Y\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">African safaris<\/a>.
