{"id":3150,"date":"2025-03-20T20:38:48","date_gmt":"2025-03-20T20:38:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunowner-news.com\/?p=3150"},"modified":"2025-03-20T20:38:48","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T20:38:48","slug":"trump-administration-sends-a-new-group-of-migrants-to-guantanamo-bay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunowner-news.com\/?p=3150","title":{"rendered":"Trump Administration Sends a New Group of Migrants to Guant\u00e1namo Bay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Trump administration sent a new group of migrants to the U.S. military base at Guant\u00e1namo Bay, Cuba, on Thursday to await deportation, claiming that they may have ties to a Venezuelan gang, according to officials with knowledge of the operation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">An <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flightaware.com\/live\/flight\/GXA6136\/history\/20250320\/1325Z\/KELP\/MUGM\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Immigration and Customs Enforcement charter flight from El Paso<\/a> transported about 20 people, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The transfer put migrants on the base for the first time since March 11, when the administration <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/12\/us\/politics\/ice-migrants-guantanamo.html\" title=\"\">brought 40 men<\/a> it had temporarily held there <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/12\/us\/politics\/ice-migrants-guantanamo.html\" title=\"\">back to the United States<\/a>. That transfer occurred a few days before a court hearing in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/01\/us\/politics\/lawsuit-migrants-guantanamo.html\" title=\"\">pair<\/a> of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/12\/us\/guantanamo-trump-lawsuit-migrants-venezuela.html\" title=\"\">lawsuits<\/a> challenging <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/trump-migrants-guantanamo.html\" title=\"\">the legality of President Trump\u2019s policy<\/a> of holding immigration detainees there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the hearing, Judge Carl Nichols of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia declined to issue an order barring further transfers to the base and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/14\/us\/politics\/judge-guantanamo-detention-migrants.html\" title=\"\">expressed doubt<\/a> that the plaintiffs would succeed in the cases because at the time no migrants remained at Guant\u00e1namo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The administration also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/20\/us\/politics\/guantanamo-venezuelans-trump-migrants.html\" title=\"\">emptied the base of migrant detainees on Feb. 20<\/a>, when it flew 177 Venezuelans it had brought there to Honduras and handed them off to the Venezuelan government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Administration officials have generally portrayed the migrants sent to Guant\u00e1namo as dangerous, accusing some of being members of a Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua. They have not offered evidence to support those suspicions, and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/12\/us\/gitmo-migrants-trump.html\" title=\"\">most of the migrants whose identities have become public<\/a> did not have criminal records in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The administration has sent scores of men, a majority of them Venezuelans, to two detention sites on the base since Jan. 29 as part of Mr. Trump\u2019s broader crackdown on illegal immigration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One of the sites, known as Camp 6, is a military prison that was built two decades ago to house suspected members of Al Qaeda. The other is a medium-security dormitory building that is part of a migrant operations center.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Trump administration has deployed about 1,000 U.S. government workers to the migrant operation. Nine hundred of them are members of the U.S. military, and 100 are civilian employees, including 70 contractors from the Department of Homeland Security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On March 15, the Trump administration also flew 238 Venezuelans to El Salvador and handed them off to the Salvadoran government, which has placed them in a high-security prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The administration has portrayed all of those men as members of Tren de Aragua.
