The king of modularity these days is an AR-style firearm like the Springfield Armory SAINT. A long way down that same list is the M1A \u2014 or is it? If you\u2019re looking to mod your M1A you do have some options, and for me, the best option is one I recently discovered \u2014 the Delta 14 Chassis.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large no-blowout\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">With the Delta 14 Chassis system, you can add a really innovative mod to your M1A-pattern\u00a0firearm.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Why<\/h2>\n<p>Why do I think that? Well, the Delta 14 system is a high-quality, lightweight chassis that incorporates plenty of modern design into a legacy system like the M14-based M1A. Image: Delta\u00a014<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The genius of the Delta 14 chassis system is that it\u2019s designed to interface with Mossberg 500-pattern stock systems. This opens up a massive amount of stock options that allow you to <a class=\"ajax-article\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/m1a-mods-making-a-custom-rifle\/\">customize your M1A<\/a> to an insane degree. You can fit standard stocks as well as stock adapters, such as the excellent ones from Mesa Tactical. This opens up an entirely new realm of stock options, and you can go wild with it. And Delta 14 gives you a lot of options on this. If you want to purchase just the chassis for $199.99, you can do that and pick out the stock of your choice. The chassis fitted out with a Mesa Tactical adapter and the excellent Ace Tactical Folding Stock. For me, this would give the M1A some serious M1A1 Carbine vibe, but \u201cman-sized.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hands On<\/h2>\n<p>This entire setup took me about an hour or so to install on a SOCOM 16 CQB M1A that I had in for review, but it\u2019s not necessarily hard to do. Ensuring everything is lined up and the way I wanted it took the most time. The Ace Tactical system for the stock and folder is well done and very smart. Once everything is locked in placed and installed it doesn\u2019t move, shake or tumble. Also, the stock locks in both the open and closed positions, and it is solid both ways. This is not going to flop around on you or give you a sloppy cheekweld when shouldering.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large no-blowout\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11828\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-6.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-6-800x800.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-6-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-6-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Generous M-Lok slots on the forend make mounting accessories like this Streamlight TLR RM1 a\u00a0breeze.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I found the Delta 14 chassis system to be incredibly well-balanced on the M1A, especially when using the shorter and lighter SOCOM 16 CQB. The Delta 14 chassis weighs less than a pound (.75 of a pound, to be exact). That\u2019s without the stock, obviously. The Ace Folding Stock and Mesa Tactical adapter are quite lightweight, and in the end, the gun remains very well-balanced.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured-magazine clearfix\">\n<div class=\"featured-magazine-cover\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"featured-magazine-cover-link ajax-home\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/magazines\/volume-7-m1a\/\">&#13;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<picture decoding=\"async\" class=\"featured-magazine-cover-image\"><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/magazine-volume-7-cover-multiple-768x886.png.webp\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/magazine-volume-7-cover-multiple-768x886.png\" alt=\"Cover for The Armory Life Digital Magazine Volume 7: M1A\"\/>\n<\/picture>\n&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Range Time<\/h2>\n<p>The handguard also seems to be quite heat-resistant, and after blasting through a few hundred rounds through the M1A the ultra-thin and light handguard was never too hot to handle. I hardly noticed heat building up and the gun remained comfortable and easy to fire.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large no-blowout\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-7.jpg\" alt=\"delta 14 chassis\" class=\"wp-image-11829\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-7.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-7-800x450.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-7-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-7-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Travis found the Delta 14-equipped SOCOM 16 to be very well-balanced and easy to shoot\u00a0well.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I noted that the chassis is quite slim and handy, and this made the handguard section quite comfortable and easy to get a grip on. The M-Lok rail slots allow for lots of mounting options so you can pick and choose accessories. I like to keep things simple and just tossed on a weapon light, specifically the new Streamlight TLR RM 1.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large no-blowout\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1106\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-8.jpg\" alt=\"delta 14 stock\" class=\"wp-image-11830\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-8.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-8-800x632.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-8-400x316.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thearmorylife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/article-folding-stock-m1a-delta-14-chassis-8-768x607.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Short and powerful, the Delta 14 and the SOCOM 16 make for a very capable\u00a0team.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I also noted that the chassis has a very well-designed magazine well section with a generous opening and nicely shaped \u201cfunnel\u201d angles to help you feed in spare mags. I can honestly say that having a full-powered rifle in a true carbine form along with a folding stock is awesome. Folding stock .308 rifles may not be for everyone, but I love it. While the might not be ideal for a precision rifle, it\u2019s perfectly suitable for the SOCOM 16\u2019s applications. And remember, you can put just about any type of stock system you want on the M1A with this chassis system.
