Though the tank first appeared in WW1 and served as infantry support, armored warfare came into its own during the Second World War as new technology and strategies evolved. In the European theater, most U.S. tank battalions had three companies of Sherman tanks and one company of Stuarts. While the M3 was America&#8217;s first dedicated anti-tank gun and served admirably in the Pacific theater, the <a to=\"https:\/\/www.nam.ac.uk\/explore\/struggle-north-africa-1940-43?ref=rockislandauction.com\" class=\"PolymorphicBaseButtonTag-sc-1b58tp5-0 ikruYM Button-sc-19r8ufz-0 TextButton-sc-1fnl7pb-0 lhXWUf gluKcS\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nam.ac.uk\/explore\/struggle-north-africa-1940-43?ref=rockislandauction.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">North African Campaign<\/a> demonstrated the need to field a heavier armor-busting option. The M1 served as America&#8217;s primary indirect-fire infantry weapon throughout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockislandauction.com\/riac-blog\/masters-of-the-air-pistol-among-ww2-air-artifacts\">WW2<\/a> and into the 1950s, with the M2 offering a lighter variant. Nothing accomplished this task better than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockislandauction.com\/riac-blog\/m60-a-vietnam-war-stalwart\">the machine gun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The machine guns used in WW2 provided a heavy volume of fire ideal for both infantry support and enemy suppression.
