A<\/span>s the tale goes, Missouri\u2019s Tom Horn met New York\u2019s William Bonney in a dusty New Mexico cow-town. Tom had teethed on revolvers; there were five notches on the butt of Billy\u2019s Colt. The youths disliked each other. A shooting match ensued. When the aces of a card deck lost their centers, bullets split cards sideways. Airborne bottles hadn\u2019t a chance. Then Billy suggested they finish behind a local livery. There he stuck 12 matches on a rail. \u201cYou go first,\u201d he said. \u201cLight a match. I\u2019ll go next. Like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

What is the USCCA? The USCCA is the U.S. Concealed Carry Association, a private organization that supports responsible self-defense.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Perceptive beyond his 15 years, Tom walked to the rail and removed two matches. \u201cWe\u2019ll shoot five,\u201d he declared. \u201cWhen I\u2019m done, nobody\u2019s empty.\u201d<\/p>\n

As credible as this preamble was the result: From 30 feet, Tom lit two matches. Billy lit one and clipped two more.<\/p>\n

More than 10,000 firearms instructors have been certified through the USCCA.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Legend has treated these miscreants kindly. They would find the law less forgiving. But in this episode of their short lives, both knew how to survive a gunfight. Characteristically, Billy the Kid sought the upper hand; Tom Horn avoided such fireworks.<\/p>\n

Sound Foundations<\/h2>\n

\u201cYour gun isn\u2019t a shield,\u201d Tim Schmidt declares in his on-screen synopsis of USCCA \u2014 the U.S. Concealed Carry Association. \u201cAvoiding a gunfight almost always turns out better for you than engaging in one.\u201d He adds that every gun owner is smart to prepare for both options. \u201cIt\u2019s a big part of the reason Tonnie and I started USCCA in 2004.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than half a million firearms owners \u2014 first-timers and shooters of long experience \u2014 have since joined USCCA. \u201cOur focus is educating and training people so they\u2019re prepared to avoid danger, save lives and keep loved ones safe,\u201d says Tim. \u201cWe have sponsorships with the National Shooting Sports Foundation and Project ChildSafe. Also, with A Girl and A Gun. We work in the legislative arena with groups like the DC Project and the Second Amendment Foundation. To inform members about the country\u2019s widely varying state firearms laws, USCCA provides a reciprocity map.\u201d<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t need a concealed-carry permit, or even a firearm to join. \u201cOur education and training programs are open to anyone who wants to learn more about firearms and how to use them,\u201d emphasizes Tim. \u201cAs part of USCCA\u2019s curriculum, basic shooting technique, then proven self-defense practices are taught on videos and in live-fire exercises on hundreds of Partner Ranges nationwide. More than 10,000 instructors have been certified. The skills taught will help anyone become a more capable shooter and aware of threats before they become imminent. Gun owners are then better equipped to protect not only themselves, but other innocents who might face lethal threats. Because mental preparation for self-defense matters as much as handgun skills, it\u2019s part of the package.\u201d<\/p>\n

A New Direction<\/h2>\n

Like Tim, Tonnie didn\u2019t grow up in \u201ca firearms family.\u201d She recalls that her brother \u201cwasn\u2019t permitted to play cops and robbers or even make a finger gun! But when I was 10, an uncle took me to a local range. I thought firing a gun would be easy, as on TV.\u201d She discovered recoil. Hitting the target was much more difficult than she\u2019d imagined. \u201cBut learning to handle a firearm instilled a sense of confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tonnie Schmidt is the co-founder of the USCCA. While in college, a friend of hers was attacked and subsequently died, driving her to learn more about self-defense.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Then, while in college, Tonnie lost a friend. \u201cShe was raped, then died as she tried to reach the campus police. From that day forward, I knew I was responsible for my own safety. So, when Tim suggested starting\u00a0Concealed Carry Magazine<\/em>, I supported him.\u201d She observed in 2003 that the shooting industry\u2019s outreach was heavily weighted toward hunters, law enforcement agencies and the military. \u201cAnd to\u00a0men<\/em>! There was less information available for families and people with limited exposure to firearms. I worked to ensure the magazine was something anyone could place on the coffee table without having to think about the backgrounds or political leanings of friends and visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Backing You Up<\/h2>\n

Another reason people join USCCA is to get its industry-leading liability insurance. Forced to fire in self-defense, a victim can face unforeseen pressures, even prosecution. \u201cUSCCA\u2019s\u00a0Self Defense Shield<\/em>\u00a0comprises four policies or plans,\u201d Tim explains. \u201cSilver, Gold, Platinum and Elite differ only in level of protection. All are backed by the AA+-rated United Specialty Insurance Company. Coverage ranges from $300,000 to $2,250,000; but all help with civil and criminal defense. They defray bail bond expense, and include hardship coverage and compensation while you\u2019re in civil court. Unlike plans that later reimburse clients, USCCA\u2019s insurance pays up front so you don\u2019t have to. You choose your attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n

Membership in the USCCA allows you access to liability insurance that can help you in the aftermath of a defensive use of force incident.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Self Defense Shield<\/em>\u00a0does not cover criminal acts or accidents. And it reserves the right of recoupment (retrieval of funds already paid) if the client is later convicted of a crime during the incident, or if he\/she is not qualified for USCCA coverage.<\/p>\n

What You Get<\/h2>\n

USCCA is based in South Carolina; but, says Tim, \u201call operations, including marketing, sales and administration, are through Delta Defense, the service provider in West Bend, Wisconsin. At this writing, Gold, Platinum and Elite USCCA memberships cost $29, $39 and $49 per month, or $299, $399 and $499 annually. Spouses can be added at half price. Membership is a \u201crisk-free\u201d buy, as you get a full refund of the first year\u2019s fee if at any time during that year you wish to cancel. USCCA memberships are currently\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0permitted by or in the states of New York, New Jersey and Washington.<\/p>\n

Besides on-screen and at-the-range training and liability insurance, members get a subscription to\u00a0Concealed Carry Magazine<\/em>, a pass to the annual Concealed Carry and Home Defense Expo and discounts to 30 percent on gear from companies like Galco and more. Alerts and maps keep you up to date on states\u2019 concealed carry rules. Platinum and Elite members get new lessons and training exercises monthly.<\/p>\n
