The bullpup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/smith-wesson-announces-the-new-dual-tube-mp-12-pullpup-shotgun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M&amp;P 12<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/gun-review-smith-wesson-mp-5-7-pistol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M&amp;P 5.7<\/a>, and of course now the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smith-wesson.com\/product\/fpc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M&amp;P FPC<\/a>. Some, including KelTec, have pointed out that their interesting new weapons have more than a little in common with some of KelTec\u2019s designs. The FPC, which isn\u2019t just the acronym for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/firearms-policy-coalition-wins-injunction-against-nj-gun-control-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">effective gun rights org<\/a>, is a Folding Pistol Carbine. The FPC has seen plenty of comparisons to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/gun-review-kel-tec-sub-2000-9mm-carbine-glock-magazine-compatible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SUB 2000<\/a> for obvious reasons.<\/p>\n<p>The FPC is a pistol caliber carbine chambered in\u2026you guessed it\u20269mm and uses S&amp;W\u2019s M&amp;P pistol series magazines. While the KelTec folds in half front to rear, the FPC folds to the side. Both methods have their pros and cons, but that\u2019s another article altogether. Smith &amp; Wesson doesn\u2019t hold back when it comes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/tag\/fpc\/\">FPC.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The FPC In the Box<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In its simple cardboard box, you get the rifle and a very nice carry bag. It\u2019s great, very plain, devoid of telltale signs of MOLLE, S&amp;W logos, or anything else that would give the bag away as something that\u2019s toting a gun.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the bag are various internal pockets to accommodate all manner of goodies. We get a 17-round magazine and two 23-round magazines. Each mag comes with a small gap filler. S&amp;W designed the grip of the FPC to accommodate fifteen-round M&amp;P compact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=cl&amp;merchant_id=c57f7b35-5796-4cf2-9f7e-d6ef5a436261&amp;website_id=4e8a62e5-c9f2-4169-947d-06856fc118da&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fgunmagwarehouse.com%2Fcatalogsearch%2Fresult%2F%3Fq%3DM%2526P%25209mm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magazines<\/a>. (Travis Pike for TTAG)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The FPC itself is fairly feature-filled. The barrel is threaded with a 1\/2\u00d728 thread pitch for suppressors and muzzle devices. However, the Pic rail across the top gives you plenty of room for optics without compromising the gun\u2019s ability to fold, unlike the SUB 2000. That\u2019s a lot of ammo capacity to carry on the gun. It adds plenty of weight, but hey, hit the gym if that\u2019s too much.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ergonomics\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/smith-wesson-announces-the-new-mp-fpc-pistol-caliber-carbine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smith &amp; Wesson<\/a> made good use of the M&amp;P grip and overall pistol design. The gun comes with backstraps that make it easy to adapt it to your hand size. It\u2019s just like their famed handgun, for better or worse. What makes things a little more complicated is that a rifle doesn\u2019t handle like a handgun. The magazine release is a bit tough to reach with your thumb. That means it\u2019s small and tough to reach with a firing grip. It\u2019s a much better idea to use it as a slide lock rather than a release. It\u2019s ambidextrous, but the right side bolt release is in the ejection port, so I don\u2019t suggest trying to thumb it downward. It\u2019s nonreciprocating as well, which is a nice touch. The charging handle protrusion on the left side is what locks the rail in place when the M&amp;P FPC folds. At the rear end, the stock isn\u2019t minimalist. The gun can\u2019t fold with a round loaded. The charging handle can\u2019t move when the gun\u2019s folded, so you can\u2019t try to charge the gun when it\u2019s in its folded configuration.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Into Action<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Smith &amp; Wesson M&amp;P FPC moves from folded into action in a split second. Grip one end, pull, and lock it into place. It couldn\u2019t be much simpler than that. It\u2019s also quick and easy to fold and stow it.<\/p>\n<p>Like a lot of pistol caliber carbines, the FPC uses a simple straight blowback action. (Travis Pike for TTAG)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While these lightweight, blowback-operated guns tend to have a rather violent recoil impulse for the calibers they use, the FPC offers you a surprisingly smooth recoil impulse. It\u2019s not as light as something like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/cmmg-adds-9mm-versions-to-their-mkgs-guard-carbine-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">radial delayed CMMG guns<\/a> or the roller delayed blowback operated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/gun-review-heckler-koch-mp5k\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MP5<\/a>. Still, it was surprising light to me. It\u2019s less violent than most AR9s and certainly smoother than the SUB 2000.<\/p>\n<p>I installed a simple <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3MQ8Kae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bushnell TRS-25 red dot<\/a> to the M&amp;P FPC with an AR height riser and a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3SP2p2r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Streamlight ProTac<\/a>. That forms a very simple but very useable home defense setup. With the TRS-25 zeroed, the gun proved itself to be surprisingly accurate. I shot supported groups at 50 yards, and groups came out at just under an inch. That makes it a little less than a 2 MOA gun. (Travis Pike for TTAG)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Money Meets Noise<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The M&amp;P FPC\u2019s trigger is very much like an M&amp;P Generation 2, right down to the trigger dingus. It\u2019s got very little takeup, and then there\u2019s the wall which is stiff and requires a sure press before the bang. It\u2019s actually quite nice for a PCC.<\/p>\n<p>That makes achieving accurate shots easier, and throwing fast shots downrange won\u2019t be hard either. I couldn\u2019t get the FPC to malfunction. Reloading is slow due to the clumsy magazine release. An extended mag release would go a long way to make reloading much easier. Reloading from the stock is also a little clumsy at first. The device that holds the magazines is placed under the stock, and the release on the right releases the magazine on the left. A little practice will go a long way.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Home Defense Appeal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The FPC\u2019s magazine-in-grip design keeps the rifle very short. At only 30\u215c inches unfolded, the FPC is shorter than most other long guns. Short is nice in a home defense scenario where your house suddenly seems a lot smaller. Little guns are easier to maneuver, and a rifle offers a more stable option than a handgun.
