While SMGs might be <em>en vogue<\/em> mostly amongst the uber-tactical crowd here, they still tend to please European police forces. They\u2019re smaller and handier than most rifles and fire common calibers the departments are already issuing.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/photo.weaponsystems.net\/image\/s-carousel\/n-fa_smg_m12_o1.jpg\/--\/img\/ws\/fa_smg_m12_o1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beretta Model 12<\/a> is a fine SMG, but certainly it\u2019s a product of its time with the open bolt design and lack of modularity. To address the aging weapons in use by the Italian Carabinieri, Beretta developed the PMX. Pistol caliber carbines are still hot in the United States, and so are these \u2018large format pistols,\u2019 so it was only natural that Beretta would release <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/beretta-pmxs-subgun-is-shipping-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the PMXs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Inside the PMXs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Beretta PMXs is a semi-auto pistol variant of the PMX submachine gun. The PMX and PMXs share a nearly identical design. Obviously, we\u2019ve lost the select fire capability, and it\u2019s a pistol, so there is no stock.<\/p>\n<p>Beretta has told me there\u2019s a brace system, but that hasn\u2019t been released yet. I\u2019m sure they\u2019re waiting for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/fifth-circuit-rules-challenges-to-pistol-brace-rule-will-likely-succeed-leaves-injunction-blocking-enforcement-in-place\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the courts<\/a> to figure out the ATF\u2019s brace ban madness. The PMs also lacks the rather neat iron sight arrangement of the full-auto PMX. (Travis Pike for TTAG)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other than those changes, the PMXs is a fairly modern PCC-type subgun design. I mean it as a complete compliment when I say it invokes a cyberpunk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/behold-ctrlpew-reveals-the-josh-shapiro-tec-9-ghost-gun-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TEC-9<\/a> aesthetic. I promptly attached a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=cl&amp;merchant_id=855e0b56-67a2-40d0-aa2b-a0764ca94489&amp;website_id=4e8a62e5-c9f2-4169-947d-06856fc118da&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.brownells.com%2Fgear%2Fslings-sling-swivels%2Fslings%2Fms3-gen2-multi-mission-sling%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Magpul MS3<\/a>. As much as I would have preferred a locked breech, the PMXs\u2019 blowback system will work very reliably with little fuss or maintenance needed.<\/p>\n<p>The PMXs is relatively lightweight at 5.29 pounds, which is isn\u2019t much for a blowback-operated gun. We also get a very nice hard shell carrying case, which is a welcome add-on to the gun.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Winning Ergonomics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The PMXs come outfitted with almost 100% ambidextrous controls. The safety and magazine release are ambidextrous. The charging handle is reversible for right or left-handed use. The controls are all easy to access and work nicely for quick operation. The bolt release is on the left side only. I thought it might be a case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/gun-review-cz-scorpion-evo-3-pistol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CZ Scorpion<\/a> design where the safety digs into the user every time you fire the gun and creates a pain in the finger. I was very pleased to be wrong. It never hurt, rubbed, or poked me while firing.<\/p>\n<p>One thing worth noting is that if you hold the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/gun-review-beretta-wilson-combat-92g-centurion-tactical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> gun<\/a> by the magwell, you are likely to either pin the bolt release down or up if you aren\u2019t conscious about it. (Travis Pike for TTAG)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The only downside to the ergonomics is a reciprocating charging handle. I\u2019m not a fan of that type of design and the PMXs\u2019s charging handle sticks out a fair bit. It\u2019s large and easy to grab, but I\u2019m curious if there\u2019s ever a chance it grabs on web gear when worn on a sling. It\u2019s not a problem I\u2019ve had, but I\u2019m no Carabinieri.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>At the Range with the PMXs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I used the PMXs with the Magpul MS3 sling in a two-point setup. I tightened the sling down a good bit and found it perfectly suited for using the old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=cl&amp;merchant_id=c57f7b35-5796-4cf2-9f7e-d6ef5a436261&amp;website_id=4e8a62e5-c9f2-4169-947d-06856fc118da&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fgunmagwarehouse.com%2Fblog%2Ftension-shooting-with-a-sling%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAS sling method<\/a> to create tension and stabilize the pistol.<\/p>\n<p>I fired with and with the sling, and there was a world of difference with the sling in place. Without the sling, the PMXs feels somewhat awkward and clumsy. This made life so much easier, and I was able to control the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/my-first-pistol-and-why-i-bought-it-the-beretta-92\/\">gun<\/a> much better. A good sling and some tension go a long way. I took the weapon out to fifty yards and pinged a 6-gong over and over again, each ping a beg for mercy it wouldn\u2019t receive.<\/p>\n<p>I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the trigger. There is some pre-travel, but we get a fairly crisp and light experience. I didn\u2019t even have to think about the trigger when it came to accuracy. (Travis Pike for TTAG)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At 25 yards, you can create what\u2019s basically one big hole with a handful of rounds fired. Out to 50 yards, I kept every round in the 9 and 8 rings of a B8. That\u2019s more than adequate for such a hefty 9mm pistol.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Eating Good<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The only bulk ammo I currently have on hand for testing is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/index.php\/cName\/pistol-ammo-9mm?jacket_type=27&amp;bullet_type=24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">115-grain brass-cased FMJs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/index.php\/cName\/pistol-ammo-9mm?jacket_type=27&amp;bullet_type=53\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">147-grain FMJs<\/a>. Both rounds performed without any issues. The majority of my shooting was 115 grain for a total of 350 rounds, followed by a hundred rounds of 147-grain ammunition. (Travis Pike for TTAG)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/beretta-pmxs-subgun-is-shipping-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beretta PMXs<\/a> has surprisingly light recoil for a blowback-operated gun. If I shoot it side-by-side with my Scorpion, the Scorpion has a more noticeably violent impulse. Additionally, it\u2019s easier to rack the PMXs\u2019s bolt. There is no great buffer spring holding it back and keeping it closed. For a direct blowback gun, it\u2019s fairly refined and easy to handle. I\u2019m impressed by the PMXs, although the MSRP is high, and the street price runs around $1,400 at the time of this writing.<\/p>\n<p>As far as I know, this is the first time Beretta has released one of their submachine guns as a semi-auto pistol, so it\u2019s certainly a new market for them. The lack of stock or brace makes it tough to shoot accurately. With that said, a sling certainly helped. A brace is probably in the offing and you can get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beretta.com\/en\/product\/pmxs-P0061#gallery-4-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">folding stock<\/a> as well if you\u2019re willing to SBR it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ergonomics * * * *\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>It\u2019s almost perfect. The controls are ambidextrous, easy to reach, and easy to use. The only downside is a reciprocating charging handle, but that doesn\u2019t seem to bother everyone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reliability * * * * *<\/strong><br \/>No issues whatsoever. The PMXs reliably ate through all of the FMJ and JHP ammo I fed it without a problem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overall * * * * \u00bd\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>Maybe it\u2019s because I like subguns so much, or maybe a Beretta subgun has me enamored, but I had a ton of fun with the PMXs. It\u2019s surprisingly effective with some sling tension.\u00a0 The PMXs is accurate, reliable, and modern.
